Escape 2009 Blog

Escape 2009, the 14th Australian Venture is an International Scout Camp for 14 to 17 year old Venturers and will be held in Perth, Western Australia in January 2009. The Australian Venture camp is held every 3 years and members from Bexleyheath District have attended previous Ventures in Victoria in 2000 and New South Wales in 2006. For Escape we have 11 Scouts and Explorers (plus 5 leaders) from Bexleyheath flying out from the UK on Christmas Day, spending a week (including New Year's Eve) in Sydney enjoying Home Hospitality from families connected to the Oatley Scout Group and then flying to Perth in time for the start of Escape.

We are busy behind the scenes creating an updated web site for Bexleyheath Scouts and the team will be blogging their Aussie adventure on the new site. The posts are already coming thick and fast so pop over to the (under development) new site to catch all the latest news: http://dev.bexleyheathscouts.org.uk.

Please excuse any mess that you might find on the new site... it will be up and running soon!

Scout Section District Website

Welcome to the website for the Scout Section of Bexleyheath District Scouts.

The Scout Section is open to boys and girls aged between 10 1/2 and 14 years of age though they can join a Troop any time after their 10th Birthday and stay with the Troop up until they are 14 1/2 .

Bexleyheath is in the Scout County of Greater London South East and we have 9 Troops meeting througout the District on different nights of the week so there should be one meeting at a time and place to suit everyone.

The latest Census figures showed around 150 Scouts within the District and all together there are around 640 youth members aged 6 to 18 throughout the different sections.

If you are already a Scout within one of the Troops we hope that you find the information on this site useful and we'll regularly update it to let you know what District activities and competitions are being planned.

If you are a Cub Scout in Bexleyheath District then as you approach the age of ten and a half your Akela should discuss with you and the Scout Leader a suitable time for you to leave the Pack, gain the Moving On Award and transfer onto the Scout Troop.

If you're not involved in Scouting but would like to be please either e-mail adcscouts@bexleyheathscouts.org.uk or telephone the District Recruitment Line on 0845 094 6368 to find out more details of your nearest Scout Groups.

2009 Patrol Hike Challenge

Another Patrol Hike Challenge on a warm sunny day - not ideal for the teams hiking but very pleasant for the leaders running the checkpoints!!

11 Scout teams took part and congratulations to the winning team from 4th Barnehurst Impeesa.

It was also pleasing to see 5 teams of Cubs coming along and walking with a Leader as this gives them a chance to see the activities Scouts do. As always this was a closely fought competition with 7th Bexleyheath the narrow winners.

The full results will appear shortly.

2009 5 A Side Football Competition

The new venue at Goals saw a 5 a side tournament full of drama right to the very end.

In the group stage 3rd Barnehurst won all 5 games to win the opening phase and progress directly to the Grand Final.

4th Bexleyheath went into the Elimination Final with 4 wins and a defeat but the battle to play them could hardly have been tighter. Bexley recovered from a poor start to finish level on points with 5th/7th Bexleyheath but were left to rue a missed penalty in the final seconds when the 2 teams had met as 5th/7th progressed on goal difference.

The Elimination Final was a hard fought contest with 4th Bexleyheath coming from a goal down to defeat 5th/7th Bexleyheath 2 - 1.

The Grand Final was even more keenly contested with no goals at the end of normal time and 4 minutes of extra time also failing to produce a goal, though 3rd Barnehurst did hit the inside of a post. So to the dreaded penalties and after the first 6 had all been scored 3rd Barnehurst's 4th kick hit the underside of the bar - in increasing tension the remainder of the penalties were all successfully dispatched and 4th Bexleyheath won the shoot out 5 - 4.

2009 Ten Pin Bowling Competition

The 5th Annual Bowling Competition in February saw Bexley Scouts pip 5th/7th Bexleyheath by 1 point to win the tournament and end 5th/7th's perfect 4 year record.

The Best Bowler competition was won by Niall (3rd Barnehurst).

In the Leaders competition 4th Bexleyheath were the winners.

2008 Haslehurst Hike

This year's Haslehurst Hike took place around Downe with an 8 mile route and 5 incident bases - map symbols, orienteering, first aid, make a hot drink and pioneering.

Congratulations to Bexleyheath ESU who won the main Haslehurst trophy and also to 4th Barnehurst Impeesa who won the Junior Trophy.

Thanks to everyone who assisted the event at HQ, running checkpoints or walking with the junior teams.

Full results will appear shortly on the Haslehurst page.

Pimp My Tent

The first link weekend camp between Cub and Scout sections in July was a great success and a full review can be found on the District Camps page.

Any suggestions for a theme for 2009 will be welcomed.

2008 Patrol Hike Challenge

On what is becoming it's traditional warm sunny day 5th/7th Bexleyheath broke 1st Baldwyn's Park's recent monopoly on this competition to win the Patrol Hike Challenge on 8 June after a very closely fought Hike.

Most teams did very well and completed the route in good time and a tremendous turnout saw 13 Scout teams take part this year.

In addition we had 5 Cub teams entered giving their oldest Cubs to a taster of the activities Scouts do, though unlike the Scouts the Cub teams had leaders walking with them.

All 5 teams whizzed around the course and 1st Bridgen were narrowly the winners of the Sixers Hike Challenge.

Tent Pitching Competition

Congratulations to the team of 4 Scouts from 1st Blendon who won the tent pitching competition at the Bexleyheath District Centenary Day on Saturday 7 June.

They were the fastest team to pitch the hike tent provided and won a brand new 4 man hike tent for their Troop.

2008 District Masterchef Al Fresco

The theme for this year's Masterchef was Caribbean as the date 4 May coincided with the date Christopher Columbus first landed in Jamaica.

Each team were required to cook a 2 course meal for 2 people on an altar fire within a given timeframe.

A wide variety of dishes were produced and impressed our independent judge, Mark, a professional chef with 4th Barnehurst Espinosa the winners after a difficult choice.

2008 District 5 A Side Football Tournament

The District's annual 5 A Side Football Tournament took place on Saturday 15 March with 10 teams taking part from 8 different troops around the district who were split geographically for the first group stage.

In the Eastern Conference there were plenty of goals whilst the Western Conference was much tighter with an average of less than 2 goals a game.

Once through to the semi finals the 2 group winners maintained their 100% records and then met in the Final where Impeesa deservedly beat 5th/7th Bexleyheath 2 - 0.

2008 Ten Pin Bowling Competition

The 4th Annual Bowling Competition in February attracted the highest entry to date with over 100 taking part.

Congratulations to 5th/7th Bexleyheath who kept up their perfect record by winning for the 4th year in a row with a score of 324 just beating one of their other teams who scored 323 and 3rd Barnehurst who scored 319.

The Best Bowler competition was won by Megan (Espinosa) who scored 132, ahead of George (also Espinosa) 127 and Sam (Bexley) 119.

In the Leaders competition 4th Barnehurst dominated with Impeesa winning and Espinosa finishing 2nd and 3rd.

2007 Haslehurst Hike

1st Baldwyn's Park completed a Hike double in 2007 by winning the Haslehurst Hike whilst 1st Blendon won the Junior Competition, for teams accompanied by a leader.

Both competitions were incredibly close which was a reflection on how well the vast majority of teams did, both in navigating around the 8 mile route and at the incident bases.

The full scoresheet will appear on the Haslehurst page shortly.
